Paying with Afterpay

When you check out with Afterpay, the seller sends your eBay order as normal and you split the payment over four interest-free instalments.

Use of Afterpay on eBay is subject to purchase eligibility and Afterpay approval. Please visit Afterpay's website for full terms and conditions when paying with Afterpay - opens in new window or tab.

When can I pay with Afterpay?

Afterpay is available for items listed in most categories on eBay.com.au, between AU $1-3,000. If an item has Afterpay available, you'll see it as a payment option on the listing page and at checkout.

Shop Afterpay deals - opens in new window or tab

Occasionally you may see Afterpay shown on an item, but then it's not available as an option at checkout. This may happen because:

  • Your order total is less than AU $1 or over AU $3,000
  • You've selected a delivery address outside Australia
  • Your order includes items from excluded categories
  • You're ordering items from different sellers
  • Items in your order have different delivery methods (for example, one with pickup and one with express postage)
  • You're using an older version of the eBay app.

Tip
To check some items out separately, select Remove or Pay only this seller. The items you haven't paid for yet will be moved back to your cart. Alternatively, you can go back to your cart and select Save for later on some items.

How Afterpay works

Pay in four instalments

Afterpay allows you to split your eBay purchase into four payments. You'll pay the first instalment to Afterpay when you place your order, then Afterpay will charge you for the remaining instalments fortnightly.

Get your items now

Paying with Afterpay is a normal eBay transaction. The seller gets the full payment and sends your order as usual.

Nothing extra to pay

As long as you pay your instalments to Afterpay on time, there are no additional fees and no interest. You can easily keep track of payments in your Afterpay account or using the Afterpay app.

Tip
Afterpay is an eligible payment method under eBay Money Back Guarantee - opens in new window or tab, meaning purchases may be protected assuming all other eligibility requirements are met. For details, please read our full eBay Money Back Guarantee policy.

How to pay with Afterpay

If Afterpay is available for your eBay purchase, you'll see it as a payment option at checkout. If you don't already have an Afterpay account, you'll be prompted to create one.

Here's how to pay with Afterpay on eBay:

  1. At checkout, select Afterpay from the list of payment methods.
  2. Review your order and delivery details, then select Pay with Afterpay.
  3. Sign in to your Afterpay account, or sign up.
  4. Review your instalment plan and payment details with Afterpay.
  5. Select Continue to place your order.

Tip
If you're using a voucher or an eBay gift card, you can still use Afterpay. Make sure you enter the redemption code(s) and select Apply before finalising your order.

Repayments and late fees

Afterpay charges the first instalment when you place your order, then charges you for the remaining instalments fortnightly.

How you pay Afterpay

As part of completing checkout, you'll be asked to sign in to your Afterpay account, or create one. You'll need to provide an Australian credit or debit card to Afterpay, which will be used to pay the four instalments.

You'll see full details of your payment plan before completing your purchase, and Afterpay will also email you with your payment schedule. Afterpay will send you notifications when instalments are due. Generally, these will be charged to your card automatically.

Managing your repayments

You can view your Afterpay payments by logging into your Afterpay account through www.afterpay.com.au - opens in new window or tab or using the Afterpay app.

Late payment fees

Late fees may apply if you don't pay your instalments on time. Please visit Afterpay's website for more information about late payment fees - opens in new window or tab.

Refunds

If you're getting a refund for your eBay purchase (for example, because you returned an item), Afterpay will refund your card and/or adjust your repayment plan accordingly. This normally takes 2-3 days, but can take up to 10 days.

Full refunds on eBay

Afterpay will refund you for the instalments which you'd already paid, and your payment plan will be cancelled. For example, if your order value was $100 and you'd paid $50 so far, Afterpay will refund you $50 and won't take any further payments.

Partial refunds on eBay

Depending on the refund amount and how many instalments you'd already paid, Afterpay may either refund you and cancel your repayment plan, or adjust your repayment plan for the reduced purchase amount.

For example, if your order value was $100 and you get a partial refund of $30, your total to pay to Afterpay is now $70.

  • If you had so far paid $50, you won't get a refund from Afterpay. Instead, you'll just have $20 left to pay.
  • If you had so far paid $75, Afterpay will refund you $5 and won't take any further payments.

For more help with refunds on eBay, please see our article on returns, missing items and refunds.

Once a refund is initiated on eBay, you'll receive an email from Afterpay with details of your refund or changes to your payment plan. For more help with refunds to your card or your new repayment plan, please see Afterpay's information about refunds - opens in new window or tab or get in touch with Afterpay - opens in new window or tab.

Problems paying with Afterpay

If you're having trouble paying with Afterpay, check the following:

  • Your order is eligible for Afterpay
Afterpay is only available on certain purchases on eBay.com.au. (See eligibility information.) You may need to remove items and check them out separately, or choose a different payment method to complete your purchase.

  • Your card details are correct
When you choose Afterpay on eBay, you'll have to provide your payment details. Make sure that you've entered the card number, expiry date and CVV code correctly, and that the name and billing address are exactly as they appear on your card statement.

  • Your browser or app is up to date
Older web browsers may not be secure enough for making payments or managing your payment methods. For more information on updating your browser, see our Technical issues article.

Afterpay isn't supported in older versions of the eBay app. For more information on updating your app, see our article on Using the eBay app.

Why was my Afterpay payment declined?

Before each transaction, Afterpay assesses your ability to make repayments. The longer you have been a responsible shopper with Afterpay, the more likely Afterpay will be to approve your purchase.

If Afterpay didn't approve your payment, it's most likely to be for one of these reasons:

  • Your card was declined
  • You've reached Afterpay's spending limits for your account
  • You have outstanding payments due with Afterpay
  • Afterpay wasn't able to verify your information.

For more assistance, please contact Afterpay - opens in new window or tab.

You can still pay for your order with another payment method such as a credit card. Simply switch the payment method at checkout.

Tip
Occasionally, an Afterpay payment may be declined after an order has been placed. If this happens, you'll find the items in My eBay - opens in new window or tab > Recently viewed and you can complete your purchase with a different payment method.

Afterpay lets you split your eBay order into four interest-free payments. You'll see details of your payment plan before completing your purchase.
